Chief John Red Eagle meets with President Obama

WASHINGTON – Chief John Red Eagle of the Osage Nation of Oklahoma on Wednesday met with President Obama along with 11 other tribal leaders from across the country.
According to the White House, Obama conveyed to the group his commitment to strengthening upon a government-to-government relationship with tribes.
Obama noted progress has been made but added more remains to be done.
Red Eagle did not return a phone call seeking comment about the meeting.
Several other administration officials also attended the session, including Attorney General Eric Holder, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.
On Thursday, Obama is scheduled to address several hundred tribal leaders attending the second annual tribal summit hosted by the administration.
At last year’s summit, the president spoke of the history shared with tribes and the federal government, conceding few groups had been marginalized and ignored by Washington for as long as American Indians.
Obama said the summit was not “”lip service” and made a commitment to forging a better relationship.
